Extending and remodelling to a Grade II listed farmhouse set within the rolling Sussex countryside.
The current farmhouse has been altered and extended in a somewhat ad-hoc manner. Our scheme sought to sympathetically remodel the property, both internally and externally to provide the desired additional accommodation, but also appropriate in scale and proportion to ensure a sympathetic relationship with the original late 14th Century Hall House. The proposed scheme has been designed to draw upon the traditional Sussex architectural language of the existing house, with its deep sprocketed eaves, exposed rafter feet and cat slide roofs. The use of high-quality materials such as handmade bricks and vertical clay tile hanging under a series of simple clay tiled roofs ensures a cohesive yet harmonious evolution of the building while dispensing with the inappropriate dormers and white plastic windows and replace with more traditional painted timber elements.
Firstly, the proposal seeks to improve the arrival experience by relocating the existing secondary entrance door to a more prominent position, and introducing an open Oak structure, welcoming visitors to the shelter of the door, before entering the existing entrance hall and rooms beyond.
A subtle glazed link between the farmhouse and smaller detached barn to the east, with frameless glazing set behind oak posts portraying the feel of an open perambulatory, while affording shelter from the elements. Central glazed doors will allow through access between the north and south courtyards.
The later (1990’s) extension to the north has been remodelled to incorporate a new family kitchen/diner with uninterrupted views and access out onto a terrace area and gardens beyond. To the north, a separate day room for use when resting from daily farm duties and can be accessed directly from either the east or west under the sheltered overhang of the external doors, while the space between accommodates a new utility/boot room and staircase leading to a new master bedroom suite and guest bedroom accommodation above.
