A CONSTRAINED DESIGN APROACH TO SUSSEX BARN CONVERSION

A CONSTRAINED DESIGN APROACH TO SUSSEX BARN CONVERSION

Project Description:

Complex negotiations with the local authority culminated in planning permission being granted for the conversion of a redundant agricultural building to a single dwelling.

Numerous planning constraints ensured the existing concrete frame was retained, while no part of the new structure was to project beyond the silhouette of the host building. This greatly influenced our design approach, which took inspiration from the simple form and detailing of a Highland Bothy, while the interior adopts a more contemporary language with clean lines, generous doorways, and tall ceilings, creating a sense of light and space much greater than its volume.

Externally, a new sweeping gravel driveway serves the property, while further planning conditions restricted the area of domestic curtilage, ensuring the remainder of the site is encouraged to naturally evolve with wild grasses, flowers and informal planting promoting the natural habitat.

Sustainable technologies have been incorporated within the build, enabling the property to function off grid, while the inclusion of rainwater harvesting forms part of the holistic approach for a carbon reduction and energy use.
