Planning consent was granted last Autumn for this family home set within mature gardens and is an inspirational fusion of the Arts and Crafts style with Swiss alpine chalet.
New Chimney
The external remodelling introduces Arts and Crafts style deep sprocketed eaves, decorative chimney, and painted timber cornices to the tile hung dormer windows. These elements are balanced against the use of high quality materials with the deep pitched roof lines, exaggerated projections and deep balconies, picking up on the alpine chalet influence of the existing property.
Set over two floors, with all the principle rooms having a south facing aspect, our proposal seeks to introduce better cohesion and fluidity between the different spaces. Internally, the revised front entrance with a one-and-a half storey high glazed façade, offers light into the entrance hall, which openings up to two storeys in height with a new curved staircase leading to a spacious gallery landing above. The principle rooms face south west, with large glazed windows and doors allowing for a seamless transition into the private gardens and views out across the Sussex countryside. In the centre, at the heart of the house, is the open-plan family dining room, creating an informal space that is conducive with modern day living. This is contrasted by the more intimate space of the panelled library.
We have considered a similar approach to remodelling the first-floor accommodation. The existing landing area has been remodelled with the introduction of a curved staircase and gallery landing, leading to the bedroom suites, with the master and guest suites affording uninterrupted views out across the Sussex countryside.
Pullen Architecture is again working with Westmount Construction, with the project due to be completed in December 2018.
